An espresso martini is a coffee cocktail. The coffee isn't a background note. It's the whole story.

Weak, stale or flat coffee gives you a flat drink. Freshly pulled espresso from quality beans gives you depth, aroma and that thick crema on top that makes an espresso martini look as good as it tastes. So this winter, before you think about the vodka, think about the coffee.

You don't need a home bar. You don't need a bartending course. You need a shaker, ice, a few simple ingredients and coffee worth building a drink around. Here are three recipes, each built on a different Wolff blend. Pick the one that suits your mood, or make all three and let the table vote.

Recipe one: The Classic, built on Big Dog

Big Dog is our everyday premium blend. Strong, reliable and full of body. It's exactly what you want when you're after a classic espresso martini that delivers every single time.

What you need:

  • 2 shots of Big Dog espresso, cooled slightly
  • 50ml vodka
  • 30ml coffee liqueur (Kahlua works well)
  • 10ml sugar syrup
  • Ice

How to make it:

  1. Pull your espresso and let it sit for a few minutes. Not cold, just off the boil.
  2. Add everything to a shaker filled with ice.
  3. Shake hard for 15 seconds.
  4. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  5. Garnish with three coffee beans.

The result is rich, smooth and beautifully balanced, with a proper crema on the surface. Big Dog gives it body and warmth. Exactly what a cold winter evening calls for.

Recipe two: The Dark and Bold, built on DRK

If you like your coffee strong and your cocktails to mean something, DRK is your blend. It's our darker roast, and it brings intensity and a deep bittersweet character that turns an espresso martini into something more serious.

What you need:

  • 2 shots of DRK espresso, cooled slightly
  • 50ml vodka
  • 20ml coffee liqueur
  • 5ml dark cacao liqueur, or two dashes of chocolate bitters
  • Ice

How to make it:

  1. Pull your DRK espresso and let it cool slightly.
  2. Combine everything in your shaker with ice.
  3. Shake hard for 15 seconds.
  4. Strain into a chilled glass.
  5. Garnish with three coffee beans.

The cacao leans into the dark chocolate notes already sitting in DRK, so the two flavours work together instead of competing. Bold, warming and genuinely impressive to hand someone across the table.

Recipe three: The Elegant Winter Serve, built on Edelweiss

Edelweiss is one of our original Haus Blends, and it's the most refined of the three. Silky and smooth, with notes of honey, almond nougat and Swiss milk chocolate. In a cocktail it brings something softer and more layered, which makes it the one to reach for when the occasion calls for a drink that feels special.

What you need:

  • 2 shots of Edelweiss espresso, cooled slightly
  • 40ml vodka
  • 20ml coffee liqueur
  • 15ml vanilla syrup
  • A small pinch of sea salt
  • Ice

How to make it:

  1. Pull your Edelweiss espresso and let it rest for a minute.
  2. Add everything to a shaker filled with ice, salt included.
  3. Shake hard for 15 seconds.
  4. Strain into a chilled glass.
  5. Garnish with a single coffee bean.

The vanilla softens the whole drink and draws out the honey and nougat already in the blend. The salt is optional, but that tiny pinch rounds everything out. This one earns its place at the dinner table.

Four tips for a better result every time

Pull it fresh. Instant coffee or a shot pulled an hour ago won't give you crema or depth. Brew fresh, let it cool for a few minutes, then shake.

Chill your glass. Ten minutes in the freezer before you serve. A cold glass keeps the drink cold and makes the crema last longer.

Shake like you mean it. The shake creates the foam. Don't be gentle. Fifteen seconds of proper hard shaking is the difference between a flat drink and a beautiful one.

Taste before you pour. Every palate is different. If your coffee is already sweet and rich, pull back on the syrup. Taste as you go and trust yourself.

Which blend should you choose?

Want a reliable espresso martini that pleases the whole room? Start with Big Dog. Prefer bold and intense? Go DRK. Making drinks for an occasion where you want to genuinely impress? Edelweiss is the one.

All three are roasted fresh Monday to Friday at our Brisbane roastery and available now at wolffcoffeeroasters.com.au.

Pick your blend. Chill the glass. Shake hard. Then tell the Wolff Pack which one won the table vote.
