Caffeine content is not fixed. It depends on the bean, the roast, the grind and how you brew it. A cup of coffee can carry anywhere from almost nothing to well over 100mg, and the type of coffee on the label only tells you part of the story.

Typical caffeine amounts

A standard 240ml cup of drip coffee holds roughly 95mg of caffeine. A single 30ml espresso shot holds roughly 63mg. Instant coffee usually sits lower, around 30mg to 90mg per cup. Decaf is not caffeine free. It typically holds 2mg to 7mg per cup, a small fraction of a regular brew.

Does roast level change caffeine?

Not much, and not the way most people assume. Caffeine loss during roasting is minor. The real difference comes down to density. Light roast beans are denser than dark roast beans, so a level scoop of light roast can carry slightly more caffeine than the same scoop of dark roast. Brew strength, not roast colour, is what actually moves the number.

Two ways to lower caffeine

Caffeine can be lower because of the coffee itself, or because it has been removed. Some varieties, such as Bourbon Pointu, are naturally low in caffeine. Decaffeination takes it out of regular coffee before roasting.

Where Wolff's caffeine range sits

Our Zero to Hero Collection lets you set the dose without lowering the standard of the coffee. All three are measured against our standard house blends.

  • Hero Caffeine: 20% more caffeine. Medium dark roast, 100% Arabica. Dark chocolate, ruby grapefruit zest, sweet pine, almond and cedar.
  • Low Caffeine: 60% less caffeine, built on the naturally low caffeine Bourbon Pointu variety. Baker's chocolate, blackcurrant, walnut, brown sugar and brandied fruit.
  • Zero Caffeine: Colombian coffee decaffeinated with the sugarcane ethyl acetate method. Sun dried apricot, toasty walnut and cedar.

None of these are a fix for anything. They are simply coffee, made for the amount of caffeine you actually want in your day.

So which one actually matches how much caffeine you want in your cup?
