A New Millennium, A New Chapter
The dawn of the year 2000 arrived with fireworks, countdowns, and nervous speculation. Would computers crash? Would time itself falter? As the clock struck midnight, the world stepped into a new millennium not with collapse, but with renewal.
For Peter Wolff, that same moment marked more than the end of one century and the start of another. By then he had already devoted two decades to the pursuit of coffee excellence. The turn of the millennium became a milestone, not of fear but of inspiration. It was a time to reflect on tradition, embrace innovation, and imagine what the next forty years of coffee could become.
Out of that moment grew the Y2K Blend, a coffee that captured both the spirit of resilience and the joy of discovery. Today, as Wolff Coffee Roasters celebrates Peter’s forty years in coffee, the Y2K Blend returns as a limited edition, double roasted single origin that is as much a story as it is a cup.
The Origins and Impact of the Y2K Blend
The name recalls the famous Y2K “bug” that never was, but the coffee is rooted in Colombia’s mountains. The Y2K Blend is grown high in the Villarazo region of Colombia by a resilient community of thirty smallholder farmers.
This coffee is crafted in partnership with Raw Material, a visionary social enterprise dedicated to helping producers achieve higher incomes through training, infrastructure, and better access to specialty markets. The collaboration ensures that each cup supports ethical sourcing and contributes to sustainable livelihoods.
These growers work with dedication and skill, producing coffees with depth, clarity, and vibrant character. Their commitment is reflected in every stage of production, from harvesting ripe cherries to carefully processing them for export. The Y2K Blend showcases not just flavour, but also the resilience and innovation of a community shaping its own future.
Double Roasting: Craft in Motion
At the heart of the Y2K Blend is the process of double roasting. While most coffees are roasted once, this method involves roasting the beans twice with precision and intent.
The first roast establishes depth, unlocking chocolate, malt, and nutty undertones.
The second roast brings clarity, revealing fruit brightness, gentle florals, and a sweet, clean finish.
Double roasting requires patience, timing, and deep knowledge of how beans respond to heat. The result is a coffee with two layers of character, rich and grounding at first, followed by bright notes that dance on the palate. It mirrors the very idea of the new millennium: grounded in what came before, but full of fresh possibility.
A Journey Through Flavour and Time
Every sip of the Y2K Blend carries you through eras of coffee culture. The early 2000s were dominated by full bodied comfort blends, made for cafés that thrived on milk based classics like the flat white. The present era celebrates nuance, clarity, and origin character.
The Y2K Blend unites both worlds. In milk, it delivers silky cocoa depth, the kind of cup that anchors conversations in busy cafés. Brewed black, its fruit layers and clean finish showcase the precision of modern specialty roasting. In this way, the blend is both a time capsule and a bridge, proof that coffee’s evolution is not about leaving one style behind but about integrating them into something richer.
Brewing Guidance at Home and in Cafés
The Y2K Blend rewards attention, but it is not intimidating.
Grind: A medium fine grind works best, giving balance between extraction and clarity.
Espresso: Use 18–20 grams, aim for 27–32 seconds. Expect a syrupy body with chocolate and fruit notes that shine in milk.
Flat White or Latte: The blend’s rich crema pairs beautifully with velvety microfoam, offering sweetness without losing coffee character.
Filter Brewing: Brew at 93°C. A pour over highlights the layered clarity, revealing fruit over a chocolate base.
Whatever your method, grind fresh. A burr grinder at home is one of the simplest investments for better flavour.
More than Flavour: Coffee as Connection
Coffee is more than chemistry. It is culture, livelihood, and connection. The Y2K Blend reflects Wolff Coffee Roasters’ unwavering commitment to sustainability and community impact.
By working directly with Raw Material and the thirty Villarazo farmers, this blend ensures that your cup contributes to real progress on the ground. It is coffee as a shared value system: the drinker’s enjoyment becomes a pathway to fairer trade and stronger farming communities.
This is what makes coffee meaningful. It is never just a drink. It is a ritual, a livelihood, and a network of people who care.
Peter Wolff’s 40 Years in Coffee
For Peter, this coffee is a deeply personal marker. Over four decades, he has witnessed and influenced the transformation of Australian coffee, from commodity to craft to global leader in café culture. He has trained roasters, mentored café owners, and helped build a culture where hospitality and excellence work together.
The Y2K Blend is his way of saying thank you: to the farmers who grow, to the roasters who craft, to the baristas who brew, and to the customers who share coffee as ritual and joy.
